UNDERSTANDING EN ISO 13849-1
AND THE WITHDRAWAL OF EN 954-1

If you design and build machines and have used EN 954-1 as a guidance standard to demonstrate compliance, you will be required to reassess your machines safety related control systems to new European standards such as EN ISO 13849-1, EN 62061 or directly to the Machinery Directive.

This process needs to be completed by 31st December 2011 when EN 954-1 will be withdrawn as a reference standard for the Machinery Directive. EN 954-1 will increasingly be regarded as a second class standard, so by reassessing your machine safety related control systems now, you can get ahead of your competitors.

There are sound reasons why compliance with EN ISO 13849-1 is the correct long term decision for your business. If you are currently using EN 954-1, you should be aware that it does not consider today's safety technology such as programmable safety devices and safety software which many of your global customers will require now and in the future.

When reassessing your machines you will discover that there is more data required, in particular, Reliability Data on the safety solutions you use. Transitioning from EN 954-1 to EN ISO 13849-1 offers a simpler transition (from Categories to Performance Levels).
